Rita Carmo is a Lisbon-based artist, and the founder and curator of the Galeria Mergulho, an independent project in a domestic venue. While getting a Fine Art degree from the Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design – Polytechnic of Leiria, Carmo completed an Erasmus Program in the Fine Arts Department of the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design of the University of Bergen, in Norway, where she later developed a Researcher Project funded by the Research Council of Norway.
In 2020, Carmo created the arts residencies Se perguntarem por mim diz que estou no Tahiti!, and Galeria Mergulho, as an independent way to break through the art production and promotion cycle.
Currently, she is developing the projects Materiais de Construção and Auto Retrato Múltiplo, which were presented for the first time during the conference Territórios identitários de Rita Carmo, part of the conference cycle As Mulheres e a Arte, at NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH), invited by the researcher Rita Mira.
Rita Carmo has held solo exhibitions since 2005, including Materiais de Construção: Ensaio aberto #1 e 2, at Galeria Mergulho, in Lisbon; O Passado está Presente, at Espaço 62, also in Lisbon; Prête moi ta plûme pour écrir’amour, at Ateneu do Catorze, in São Luís, Odemira; Um Quarto Só Dela, at Galeria Municipal de Torres Vedras, in Torres Vedras; and How Things Grow and Transform Themselves Into Other Separate Things, at Galleri Fisk, in Bergen, Norway.
Carmo has also participated in collective exhibitions, including Staring Contest #1, with Nuno Sousa Vieira, at the CAPC, Coimbra; AAA – Abertura de Ateliers de artistas, at Oficina Impossível, in Lisbon; Duplo(s), at Galeria Sumo Preto, also in Lisbon; Nonstopopening, at Galeria Zé dos Bois, in Lisbon as well; and Galeria dos 30 Dias, with Pedro Barateiro, in Caldas da Rainha.
