Biography

Lígia Afonso (Lisbon, 1981) is an art historian, curator, editor, and a researcher at LiDA – Laboratório de Investigação em Design e Artes (Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design – Polytechnic of Leiria) and at IHA – Instituto de História da Arte (NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH)), with a PhD in History of Art at NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH)/Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo e de Design da Universidade de São Paulo (FAUUSP), with a Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) scholarship. Moreover, Afonso is an adjunct professor at the Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design –Polytechnic of Leiria, where she was appointed Scientific Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair in Arts and Culture Management, Cities and Creativity – IPL. She has also worked as: assistant curator for the 29th edition of the Bienal de SãoPaulo; co-curator of the Curators' Lab of the Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture; an adjunct-curator of the Anozero’19 – Coimbra Biennial Of Contemporary Art; a member of the Rede Cultura 2027 application editorial team to become European Capital of Culture; and, a jury for awards such as the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Prize, and the International Association of Art Critics (AICA)Awards. Lígia Afonso is currently preparing BAC – Contemporary Art Bank’s first exhibition at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar/EGEAC – Empresa de Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural, and on an exhibition deriving from theCollection Caixa Geral de Depósitos (Centro de Artes – Caldas da Rainha).
