In Russian, «Maskirovka» means dissimulation, deception, or the manipulation of what is clear, to deceive what one thinks they know. This project, composed of 25 color photographs and a seventeen-minute-long color film, investigates the mechanisms through which one builds meaning from what one sees, concerning what one knows. It particularly questions the articulation of the photographic image (and what it builds from the experienced fact) with cinema language and the staging of factual text. Does how one sees and hears things play a role in how one understands them? What does the word (free from photographic process constraints) allow one to imagine, and how does its reading compete with what is observed in a photograph? What is the connection between the inherent plausibility of the photographic document and the suspension of unbelief necessary for fiction?

The film stars Diogo Dória and João Pedro Bénard. Maskirovka also features a critical text by Emília Tavares, titled Verdade ou Consequência? a fábula das imagens.
