The central space of Anozero – Bienal de Coimbra, the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova houses the echoes of its religious and military past. The building is in Baroque style, sober and utilitarian, with turrets. The monastic ensemble, initiated in 1649, replaced the primitive cenobium of Clarist nuns that the Mondego River bed had ruined. A crystal silver urn from the 17th century is kept at the retable of the sanctuary of the church, where the body of Elizabeth of Portugal is venerated. The ancient stone tomb of the patron saint of the city, made by Mestre Pêro in 1330, can be found at the back-choir of the church. The 1733 cloister was designed by Carlos Mardel.
