Suspended spaces is a project proposed by a collective of artists and researchers, who have been working from territories « em suspenso » [suspended], due to political, economic, and historical conflicts. These sensitive spaces, abandoned by modernity, make the artistic gaze necessary. The project started with the ghost town of Famagusta, in Cyprus, devoid of inhabitants due to the Turkish army, in 1974; followed by the unfinished architectural project for the Tripoli International Fair in Lebanon, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and still unoccupied to this day. Then, the project traveled to Niterói, Brazil, where Oscar Niemeyer conceived the Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC) in relation to the MACquinho, built simultaneously and mirroring the MAC as a gateway to the neighboring favela.
Suspended spaces is a research project that organizes residencies and exhibitions, and produces artworks and publications. The artists were invited to share the experience lived in particularly fragile spaces at each and every stage (Cyprus, Lebanon, Brazil).
First Moment – from May 5 to June 17, 2016
Second Moment – from June 21 to July 23, 2016
